An 81-year-old pensioner from Bourne End, Bucks was inspired to take part in the Hydro Active Woman’s Challenge in Hyde Park on Sunday 3 September, after meeting a local boy with muscular dystrophy.

Jean Neighbour decided to take up the challenge when she met 11-year-old Tomas White through her granddaughter. Tomas has Duchenne muscular dystrophy and is a full time wheelchair user.

Jean said, “After meeting Tomas I really wanted to do something to help him and other children who have muscle wasting conditions. I am very lucky to have 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren who are all fit and healthy. I thought the Hydro Active Challenge would be a good way for me to put my own muscles to the test and do something to help.”

Jean completed the 5K race in Hyde Park London on Sunday and has raised over £400 for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.

Michaela White, Tomas’ mother said, “Jean has been amazing by jumping into action and raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign after she met Tom. You would never believe that she is in her 80s, and we have all been really touched by her determination to help.”
