The launch of a new website
By Dominick Evans, October 2006
The plans to start Muscular Dystrophy Patients United (MDP) started a little over a year ago. At the time, Dominick Evans, a twenty-four year old with spinal muscular atrophy was becoming increasingly aware of the need for an organisation for those with muscular dystrophy. This organisation would need to fill in the gaps where other American organisations left off.
There were many services, which other organisations simply did not offer, so what were those with muscular dystrophy supposed to do when they had needs but no funding sources?
It was with this in mind that Muscular Dystrophy Patients United was created. With the help of his family and friends (some who are also patients and parents of patients with muscular dystrophy) the foundation for the organisation was formed and the first page of the website was developed.
At this point, the website is still a work in progress and the first fundraiser is in its planning stages, but Dominick is certain he will attain all the lofty goals he has for the organization.
Now 25 years old, Dominick has developed a 100% non-profit, 100% volunteer run organisation where 100% of the funds earned through fundraising are used for patient services.
Currently, the development for MDP continues. Once fundraising officially begins, MDP plans to serve seven areas around the United States.
The services that Muscular Dystrophy Patients United plans to include are vast. There are several things the organization plans to promote in attempt to insure those with muscular dystrophy can lead more productive lives.
Services include:
- Advocacy
- Special clinics (Including one for OB-GYN Care & Dental
Services for those who cannot transfer to traditional doctor’s
office tables, beds, and chairs) - Medical referrals
