November 2004 - Planning permission

Good news - on 9 November 2004 Surrey County Council gave planning permission for the adaptations to the Baskaran family home to go ahead.

"Jamie and Oliver are deciding on how they will decorate their rooms"

Next steps

A surveyor, employed by Surrey Social Services, now has the task of pitching the contract for the work to a number of builders. He has selected two and the Baskaran's have also suggested one firm they know of.

The builders have until 3 December to put together an estimate of how much the work will cost and in what time they can complete the adaptations. The surveyor will then study each bid in terms of cost and realistic time scales and make a decision on who to award the work to.

The Baskaran's expect work to start in January. Ben Baskaran said: "Naturally we are pleased that the permission has been granted. I am not sure who was more excited about the news, the kids or my wife and me.

"We are aware that we face major disruption as our garden takes on the look of a building site. We now have to wait and find out who has got the job and plan with them how we shall live our lives without getting under their feet. Jamie and Oliver are deciding on how they will decorate their rooms, I am not sure if this will become the most contentious issue or not, but we will see."

In the December update we will feature photographs of the family home before the work starts so we can see how the house changes over the coming months.
