Space requirements

It is important when planning adaptations for a child or adult with muscular dystrophy or a related condition, to understand the disability and to appreciate the long-term physical limitations, as these influence the decisions made and the need for both space and special features.

The essential factor to consider is whether a wheelchair will be used (usually a powered chair which is less manoeuvrable than a self-propelled model and therefore requires additional space). Also although the person will retain functional use of their hands, the grip and strength may be considerably reduced.

Detailed adaptation specifications can be found in the Adaptations Manual (chapter 15).

Long-term housing needs

For more information about long-term housing needs and the importance of space please download this pdf: Housing needs and space - justification (43 kb) [pdf]

It also includes information about what to do when rehousing is being considered.

(This is also covered in chapter 11a of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign's Adaptation manual.)

Space requirements

The space required is governed by the dual need to provide circulation space and sufficient wall-length to accommodate the essential fittings. For more information, please download this pdf: Space Requirements - justification (43 kb)pdf

(This information can also be found in chapter 11b of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign's Adaptations Manual, 2nd edition.)

Room size recommendations

Questions are frequently asked about the optimum size of rooms. These are difficult to answer without knowing the ease of access to the rooms, the shape of the rooms, the number and size of windows, the location of doors, and how an extension (if one is to be built), will dovetail on to the existing house. Instead, it is more constructive for the architectural designer to be given an accurate brief early in the process; when the essential features and space dimensions have been considered, these will determine the size of the rooms.

(Also see chapter 14 Scales & Templates in the Adaptations Manual.)

The size of the bathroom and bedroom are discussed in the relevant sections of chapter 15 of the Adaptations Manual.
