Parents' Checklist
All parents need to consider their children's specific needs when deciding which school is best for them.
You should be able to choose from the widest range of mainstream or special schools in your area. Senior specialist staff in these staff should advise parents about the:
- existing facilities, suppor services, policies and procedures for pupils with disabilities;
- specific changes to the building structure, timetables etc, that would be planned and implemented for your child;
- access to the school's curriculum;
- school ethos, including partnership with parents (respecting your wishes, for example, about what your child and other children are told about the neuromuscular condition), bullyng, complaints management.
Checklist for parents
This checklist is designed to be as comprehensive as possible. Many schools may not have dealt with some of these issues before and will have to put facilities and support in place for your child. No school will be able to do everything and you may need to make hard choices. Don't be daunted. What you are looking for is a school which your son or daughter likes and that will work in partnership with you to provide him or her with the best educational experience possible.Download the Parents' checklist: Education Guidelines.
