Location: Costa Rican rainforest

In November 2007, the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign and a team of 24 supporters returned from the Sahara desert and raised over £65,000 between them. Due to the unprecedented success of this event both in raising funds and awareness, we are proud to announce that we are now setting our sights on new pastures.

The Location

A view on the Costa Rican quest Costa Rica, while a small country is one of the most ecologically diverse in the world. It is home to 5% of all plant and animal species. This equates to the greatest density of species in the world, all in a country that is smaller than Scotland. This area is a tough environment to live in for over a week, with a typically tropical and humid climate. However you will feel empowered by an achievement that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

The Challenge

Led by an experienced guide from the expedition management company Across the Divide (as used for our Sahara trek 2007), you will be ‘on the go’ for approximately eight hours a day starting as the sun rises. Trekking between camps will be a hard day’s work so you’ll need to be sure that you have trained prior to the challenge in order to appreciate the splendour of the rainforest. Your trek will cover approximately 72 kilometres of undulating forest terrain through tracks in the typical climatic conditions of an equatorial jungle. The trek then leads you and the team to the week’s finale as you muster
rafting in Costa Rica your strength to raft down the Pejibave river’s grade III rapids before being transferred out of the rainforest ready to change onto some clean clothes for a celebratory gala.

If you wish to join this team of intrepid explorers in this challenging yet ecologically rich environment, you will need to raise a minimum of £3,100. Money raised will be used to improve the quality of life for people with muscle disease, and to lead research into treatments and management of neuromuscular conditions.
