Unplanned admissions results launched in Parliament
The findings of an audit into unplanned emergency admissions to hospital for people with muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular conditions was launched at a meeting with MPs and Peers in Parliament yesterday.
The NHS audit was undertaken with Specialised Commissioning Groups in the London, East of England, South East Coast and South Central regions, as well as the MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases, and revealed that an alarming 37.5 percent of unplanned emergency admissions are preventable.
The All Party Parliamentary Group for Muscular Dystrophy, chaired by Dave Anderson MP, heard a presentation of the audit findings which was led by Professor Mike Hanna, Consultant Neurologist and Director of the MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases, and Sean Overett, Assistant Director at the London Specialised Commissioning Group.
The in-depth study included measures that could have prevented admissions and recommendations about the provision of specialist care and the co-ordination of services.
The audit was undertaken in the context of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign's Invest to Save report published in May 2011 and the ongoing national neuromuscular work plan.
The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign expresses the hope that NHS commissioners follow up this audit report by taking action to reduce the number of unplanned emergency admissions, with particular focus on the urgent investment required which can bring down the number of preventable admissions.
