Scottish Cross Party Group Inquiry
The Cross Party Group (CPG) on Muscular Dystrophy in the Scottish Parliament, chaired by Jackie Baillie MSP, has conducted an Inquiry into access to specialist neuromuscular care and social care in Scotland.
The Building on the Foundations in Scotland campaign launched in 2008 by the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign seeks to improve access to specialist care for families living with muscle disease across Scotland.
The Inquiry's launch session was in April 2010, and the CPG has held oral evidence sessions and received written evidence submissions, with a final report, the Mackie Report, published on
28 September 2010 and launched in the Scottish Parliament.
The key issues which the Inquiry covered included:
- patients and clinicians' experiences and perspective of services
- the views of NHS Boards, NHS Scotland regarding developing service provision and standards
- evidence from health professionals such as Care Advisors, Occupational Therapists and physiotherapists
- links with social care, housing and independent living, including employment
- provision of wheelchairs, equipment and orthotics to enable and promote independence and self determination
- an international comparison with services in Denmark
The Cross Party Group's Inquiry was conducted alongside the neuromuscular services review commissioned by the Scottish Government in September 2009 and currently being undertaken by the Scottish Muscle Network.
The CPG hopes people living with muscle disease in Scotland, as well as clinicians and health professionals, will continue to submit evidence to the CPG as MSPs monitor the implementation of the recommendations in the Mackie Report.
