Tackling the Challenges of 2011

Robert Meadowcroft, Chief Executive of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign

This year we need to fund a number of critical research projects, building on over 50 years of scientific study we've already completed. Clinical trials are now underway to determine if a treatment called exon skipping can help boys affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The technique looks so promising for tackling Duchenne muscular dystrophy and it might be applicable to other conditions.

Yet the one thing that could significantly hold us back in this area is a lack of funding. This is why a donation from you today is so important.

Government spending cuts will have a big impact on many people with muscle disease. We anticipate a year of increasing demand from families for information and advice on all aspects of living with a neuromuscular condition. Although NHS funding may be protected, everyone will get a thinner slice of the cake. But with enough charity support, we can work hard to ensure that the needs of patients with muscle disease are not overlooked.

Families often need our help in purchasing specialist equipment, much of which is very expensive and not available on the NHS. We will also see a greater reliance on the charity's advocacy services and peer-to-peer support groups.

In order to start all this work now, Muscular Dystrophy Campaign needs the help of supporters like you.

You might also be surprised to know just how much the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign relies on the generosity of our supporters. Many other charities receive significant funding from statutory sources. But not us. We depend on supporters- just like you - to fund more than 95 percent of the research, specialist training, support, advocacy and equipment we provide, every day of the year.

To help us continue our vital research and all our work, I hope I have inspired you to play your part and give a gift today. Your support is very important to us.

If you have been inspired by our plans please donate today to support our vital work in the coming year.
