Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG)
To adapt your house you need to be the property owner or a tenant with a permission to carry out an adaptation from your landlord.
The first step is to approach social services and request that an Occupational Therapist (OT) conducts an assessment of your adaptation needs. The Occupational Therapist should make recommendations on necessary and appropriate work that needs to be done and forward the recommendations, with an application for grants, to the Housing or Environmental Health Department of your local council.
You should get a decision on your application within six months.
From December 2005 there will be changes to the means-testing. The new rules allow all families of children with disabilities the right to apply for grants of up to £25,000 without means-testing. The new rule is already in force in Northern Ireland and Wales. In Wales is the grant £30,000.
The system is different in Scotland and Housing Grants for improvement and repair of houses are awarded by the local councils.
