The inaugural meeting of the APCP Neuromuscular Physiotherapy Special Interest Group (SIG) took place on 29th May 2005 at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) Headquarters, London. The group was formed to address an increasing need for physiotherapists working with these rare conditions to share expertise and information, in an area, which is rapidly changing. The field of neuromuscular disorders covers a wide variety of conditions including muscular dystrophy (of which Duchenne is the most common), spinal muscular atrophy, as well as myopathies (both congenital and acquired) and sensory and motor neuropathies.

The group actively encourages participation from physiotherapists working through the transition stages, from paediatric to adult care in order to facilitate a better understanding of the emerging difficulties that many of these patients and their families encounter. Working towards a seamless service will ultimately provide patients with a smooth transition during what for many, is viewed as a challenging time.
The APCP SIG provides therapists with a medium to work together to develop evidence based management programmes. It offers a forum where ideas can be discussed and research is fostered through peer support and mentorship. The group has active links with the adult neurology and respiratory groups and will work in partnership with stakeholders and the CSP.

The main aims of this group are:
1. To promote the role of physiotherapists working with Neuromuscular Conditions in both the paediatric and adult sector.
2. To provide a forum for clinical networking, peer support, research and information on specific clinical issues.
3. To provide an expert body of skills and knowledge in the field of neuromuscular disorders.
4. To develop and promote the use of evidence based practice within this specialised clinical area of paediatric and adult conditions.
5. To promote a national standard of best practice for members working in this field.
6. To develop and promote access to continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities through conferences, study days and courses.
