Scientific meeting reports

The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign strives to support communication and collaboration among top-level scientists and clinicians by organising and sponsoring workshops and conferences. Encouraging and nurturing young scientists early in their careers is also recognised as being vital for the future success of neuromuscular research.

These meetings give people involved in research the opportunity to share ideas and build relationships. This will ultimately improve the quality of research and speed up the translation of laboratory discoveries to the benefit of patients.

  Clinicians and scientists meet to discuss new guidelines for IBM diagnosis and treatment The outcomes of a London inclusion body myositis (IBM) workshop have been published outlining recommendations to improve diagnosis and assess new potential treatments.

  International experts meet to bring down the barriers in research More than 350 muscle disease experts and patients have attended a TREAT-NMD conference in Brussels to discuss strategies to bring down the barriers to research and agree on future directions.

  UK Neuromuscular Translational Research Conference 2009 Scientists and clinicians gathered in Newcastle in March to discuss exciting new potential treatments for neuromuscular conditions.

  World Muscle Society Congress More than 550 muscle disease researchers attended the 13th Congress of the World Muscle Society in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, which continues to promote and disseminate knowledge in the neuromuscular field for the benefit of patients.

  XXXVII Annual European Muscle Conference The Annual European Muscle Conference, held at Keble College, Oxford, covered a broad-range of subjects from the basic biology of muscle function, through to the investigation of muscle diseases and treatments.

  Muscle Cell Development Meeting Report The first British Muscle Cell Development meeting was dedicated to providing PhD students and post-doctoral researchers with a national forum to present their work and promote collaboration between researchers.

  London Myology Forum Report The inaugural meeting of the London Myology Forum, hosted at King’s College, London, was the first in a regular series of meetings aimed at bringing together clinical and basic scientists interested in muscle function and disease.

  3rd Nuclear Envelope Disease and Chromatin Organisation UK Meeting This meeting, held at King’s College, London, discussed the latest research on degenerative diseases known as the 'laminopathies', a group of conditions including Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy
